Vlad Plahotniuc and William Massolin Expressed Willingness to Consolidate Cooperation  between the Republic of Moldova and Council of Europe

Today, Chairman of PDM, Vlad Plahotniuc, had a first meeting with the new Head of Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, William Massolin. 

The discussions that took place at PDM's headquarters were cordial and concerned political and economic situation in the country, including preparation of the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Vlad Plahotniuc briefly reviewed the evolutions in Moldova in recent years, having underscored the stability brought by PDM government, keeping the path to the West, as well as economic progress achieved since 2016.  The democratic leader informed the European official about the reforms implemented in the country and the increase in people's incomes, having said, however, that there is still much to be done.

As for the forthcoming elections, the chairman of democrats said that PDM wants a fair electoral process that meets all democratic standards, and the outcomes must express exactly the will of citizens, leaving no room for contestation. "We shall ensure transparency of the parliamentary elections, and we are the most interested in them being transparent. Opinion polls show that citizens trust PDM more", said Vlad Plahotniuc.

In his turn, William Massolin specified that the central elements of cooperation between the Council of Europe and the Republic of Moldova have been constant since 1995 until present. They concern the existence of democratic institutions, rule of law and respect for human rights. He reminded that there are a number of on-going projects supported by Council of Europe in our country, having added that he will work constructively with Moldovan authorities for the success of these projects.

"In the short run, together with international partners present in the Republic of Moldova, we shall follow closely parliamentary elections, which are very important for the political development of the country", said the Head of Council of Europe Office in our country.

Chairman of PDM expressed the wish for closer cooperation between Moldova and Council of Europe, having pointed out in this context that the ambition of the government is not just to achieve economic progress, but also consolidate rule of law, because positive economic perspectives can only be ensured in such a state.

Mention must be made that Head of Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, William Massolin, started his activity in the Republic of Moldova this autumn. He has significant diplomatic experience in the Council of Europe, as well as in the European Union and the UN.

Council of Europe Office carries out a rich activity in Moldova, supporting diverse programs, among them programs related to fighting discrimination, to justice sector reform and building confidence between the two banks of Nistru.
