The President of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc began his visit to the United States of America
During the visit to the United States, the DPM’s President Vlad Plahotniuc had his first meetings with Will Ballard Hurd, member of the Texas House of Representatives, Christopher Andrew Coons, the US Senator and Markwayne Mullin, member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
The discussions focused on the subjects of international interest, with emphasis on the situation in the Republic of Moldova and the region.
Aspects on internal reforms of the Republic of Moldova and ensuring the security of our country were discussed during the meeting with Will Hurd. Hurd has a consistent experience in administration reform and security, being the member of two committees in the House of Representatives – the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Internal Security. In the context, Will Hurd appreciated the efforts of the Republic of Moldova in moving closer to the West, stating that Russia is a concern for the United States. He also expressed regret that the international agreements on the Transnistrian region (including the 1999 OSCE Istanbul Summit Decision) were not complied with.
In turn, the Senator Christopher Andrew Coons, during his meeting with the DPM’s President Vlad Plahotniuc, said that he is aware of the importance of the Republic of Moldova in the region, including the role it played and will be able to play in relation to other states from the same area, such as Ukraine and Georgia. The Senator Coons also said that he understands the efforts and progress made by our country, as well as the existing risks regarding the frozen conflict that the Republic of Moldova is going through.
Also, the Congressman Markwayne Mullin said during the meeting with the DPM’s President Vlad Plahotniuc that he strongly supports the Moldova’s objective of European integration. At the same time, the US official said that he fully supports the efforts to combat Russia’s hostile actions.
In turn, the DPM’s President presented the main governance reforms in 2016 and 2017, emphasizing the support provided by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Union to these reforms. Vlad Plahotniuc referred briefly to the measures to stimulate the business environment, reduction of bureaucracy, strengthening of banking and finance legislation, and improvement of the functioning of justice. The dialogue also focused on the efforts of the Republic of Moldova for energy interconnection with the European Union through Romania.
As regards national security, the DPM’s President said that the Republic of Moldova is the target of the Russian Federation’s hybrid war, which includes aggressive propaganda, unfavorable economic measures, as well as support of pro-Russian political forces in the country. Vlad Plahotniuc mentioned that the Russian troops are still on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, and that our country insists on their withdrawal. Referring to home policy, the Democratic leader pointed out that the future parliamentary elections have a high stake in the future of the Republic of Moldova. „It is important to maintain European course and not to allow the pro-Russian forces seize power”, the DPM’s President stated.
At the invitation of the Democratic leader, the three US officials announced their intention to pay a visit to our country.
Together with the DPM’s President, who is at the head of a delegation of the ruling coalition, these meetings were attended by the Vice-President of the DPM and Speaker of the Parliament Andrian Candu, the President of the European People's Party of Moldova and Vice-President of the Parliament Iurie Leanca, Vice-President of the DPM and the Minister of Justice Vlad Cebotari.
